As a Latinx therapist, I understand how vital it is to have a therapist who acknowledges and respects the cultural nuances that shape our lives. Growing up in a community where emotional expression wasn’t always encouraged or validated, I’ve come to recognize the importance of providing culturally sensitive and affirmative therapy. As a first-generation Guatemalan American, I’ve seen firsthand how generational trauma, societal expectations, and family dynamics can shape our understanding of emotions, and ultimately, our mental health.

Cultural sensitivity isn’t just about understanding your cultural background—it’s about recognizing how your cultural identity shapes the way you experience anxiety, stress, and relationships. This is particularly important for people of color, immigrant communities, and marginalized groups who may have faced unique challenges growing up. Therapy is conducted by licensed professionals who have completed extensive education and training, including a bachelor’s degree, a master’s or doctorate, and clinical hours. Therapists are trained to help individuals address deeper emotional issues, mental health concerns, and behavioral patterns.

Life coaching, on the other hand, focuses on helping people achieve their goals, overcome obstacles, and make positive life changes. Coaches may not have the same level of formal education as therapists, and their approach is more goal-oriented rather than focused on healing underlying emotional issues.
